Are You More Psychic Than You Think? Learning to Trust the Awareness You Already Have

I think I was psychic long before I ever called myself psychic.

As a child, I remember having a sense of things that sometimes felt beyond my years. I would pick up on atmospheres, people and situations. I often felt things very deeply, and there were times when I simply seemed to know something without being able to explain exactly how I knew it.

For a long time, though, I didn’t have language for any of that.

I just thought I was sensitive.

Or observant.

Or perhaps, as I sometimes felt growing up, an old soul who seemed to notice things other people didn’t.

And the funny thing is, when I look back over my life now, I can see that awareness weaving its way through almost everything I have done.

When I was cabin crew with Virgin Atlantic, you learned very quickly how to read people. You could walk into a situation and sense the mood before anybody said very much at all.

Later, when I became a police officer, there were moments when you had to pay attention to a feeling, a hunch, or something about a situation that didn’t quite add up.

And then came legal recruitment.

I spent years reading candidates, clients, conversations and deals.

I could be sitting opposite somebody talking about their career and sensing there was something underneath what they were saying. I could feel when somebody was holding back. I could often sense whether a deal was going to move, whether somebody really wanted something, or whether they were telling themselves a story that wasn’t quite true.

At the time, I didn’t necessarily think, I’m using my psychic awareness.

I would have called it instinct.

Gut feeling.

Experience.

Reading people.

But increasingly I think those things sit much closer together than we sometimes realise.

Are You More Psychic Than You Think? | Chrystal Rose

In this episode of Soul Sync, Chrystal Rose joins me for a conversation about intuition, psychic awareness, tools such as tarot and colour, the difference between psychic and mediumistic information, and what happens when we stop trying quite so hard to get everything right.

The moment we put the word “psychic” on it

The moment we put the word “psychic” on it

Here is the strange part.

I could use my intuition all day long without thinking twice about it.

But as soon as I sat down and thought:

Right. Now I’m going to give somebody a psychic reading…

Boom.

Suddenly there was pressure.

Was that thought mine?

Did I imagine that?

What if I’m wrong?

What if they say no?

What am I supposed to be feeling?

Where did all the awareness I had been using quite naturally for years suddenly go?

I think this happens to so many people when they begin exploring psychic development.

We take something that has often been operating quietly in the background of our lives and turn it into something we believe we have to perform.

We stop feeling and start testing ourselves.

And the moment we start testing ourselves, we start judging ourselves too.

That is one of the biggest things I now want to help people move away from.

Because psychic development, for me, is not about proving that you have a mysterious ability.

It is about becoming more aware of how you already experience the world.

Sensitivity needs space

Many of us become very good at overriding ourselves.

We feel something and dismiss it.

We sense something about somebody and immediately tell ourselves we are being judgemental.

We have an idea and talk ourselves out of it.

We get a strong feeling that we should go in one direction, and then spend three days constructing a perfectly logical argument for doing the opposite.

I have certainly made enough mistakes in my life by ignoring my own instincts.

Some of them spectacularly.

But those experiences also taught me something.

The more I began listening to the quieter part of myself, the easier it became to recognise its language.

And I think that is a huge part of psychic development.

Not becoming louder.

Becoming more receptive.

Psychic development doesn’t have to look one particular way

One of the things Chrystal and I explore in the conversation is just how many different doorways there are into psychic awareness.

Cards.

Colour.

Numbers.

Flowers.

Wax.

Bones.

Ribbons.

Pictures.

Symbols.

Even an ordinary object can become something you work with if it helps you move out of analysing and into feeling.

I tell Chrystal the story of arriving to work at a psychic fair and realising, to my horror, that I had forgotten my tarot cards.

At the time, those cards felt like my safety blanket.

Without them, I thought I was in trouble.

Instead, I ended up spending the day giving readings without them.

And something shifted.

I realised that the cards had never been the source of the information. They had simply helped me give myself permission to access what was already there.

That became an important lesson for me.

The tool is not the psychic ability.

You are.

There is no prize for getting everything right

This is probably one of the biggest things I have learned through my own development.

You have to become comfortable with being wrong sometimes.

I know. Horrifying.

Particularly for those of us who like to get things right.

But development becomes incredibly difficult when every exercise feels like an examination.

I see it in mediumship too.

Someone receives one “no” and suddenly their mind takes over.

I’ve lost it.

I’m making it up.

I can’t do this.

But a no can teach you an enormous amount.

Sometimes the feeling was right and the interpretation was wrong.

Sometimes you moved out of the awareness and started thinking.

Sometimes you simply got it wrong.

And that is okay.

Chrystal and I talk quite a lot in the episode about experimentation, interpretation, subtle impressions and learning the difference between psychic information and mediumistic information. We also explore why a strong psychic foundation can be so valuable when somebody later begins developing their mediumship.

This is why I increasingly believe development needs to feel less like performance and more like play.

Try something.

Notice what happens.

Get feedback.

Try again.

Become curious about yourself.

That is where so much of the learning happens.

Psychic awareness and mediumship are not the same thing

This is something I think people often rush past.

For me, psychic awareness is primarily about becoming aware of the energy, emotions and information connected with the person in front of you and the world around you.

Mediumship involves a different intention: becoming aware of and communicating with the spirit world.

They can feel different.

They can also overlap.

And learning to recognise that difference is part of development.

I often say that if somebody wants to develop mediumship, I would much rather they first become comfortable with their own psychic awareness.

How does your intuition feel?

What happens to your awareness when you connect with another person?

How do you receive information?

Do you know?

Do you feel?

Do you see?

Does something simply drop into your mind?

What happens in your body?

There is no universal answer.

And that is exactly the point.

Your awareness should look like you

One of the reasons I have become so passionate about teaching is that I don’t want people trying to become a copy of somebody else.

You can learn from teachers.

You can learn structures.

You can practise techniques.

But ultimately, psychic and mediumistic development is about discovering your own language of awareness.

Your memories matter.

Your experiences matter.

Your emotions matter.

The way your imagination works matters.

The things you notice matter.

Even the completely random associations that appear in your mind can matter.

You are not trying to become somebody more spiritual.

You are learning how to become more aware of yourself.

And perhaps that is why this part of my life feels strangely full-circle.

I have spent much of my working life helping people recognise their potential.

In recruitment, that might have meant sitting opposite somebody who had become stuck and helping them see that their life or career could be bigger than the version they had settled for.

Now I find myself having very different conversations.

But underneath them, perhaps the intention is not so different.

What is already inside you that you haven’t fully trusted yet?

The Power of You

That question is at the heart of the new online psychic development class I am launching this autumn.

I called it The Power of You very deliberately.

Because this is not about me giving you psychic ability.

It is not about me telling you what you should experience.

And it certainly isn’t about everybody in the room producing the same result in exactly the same way.

It is about creating a safe, encouraging and positive space to explore.

We will work with energy and awareness.

We will experiment.

We will work with one another.

We will look at different ways information can be perceived.

We will learn through experience rather than trying desperately to memorise what psychic awareness is supposed to feel like.

And yes, sometimes things will work beautifully.

Sometimes they won’t.

Both can teach us something.

My hope is that people leave these sessions feeling more confident in themselves, more curious about their own awareness and less frightened of getting something wrong.

Because I increasingly believe that the pressure to be right is one of the quickest ways of shutting sensitivity down.

Curiosity opens it back up.

New to psychic development?

If you are beginning your development — including if your longer-term interest is mediumship — The Power of You: Online Psychic Development Class is where I recommend starting.

Explore The Power of You →
