The Power of the Present Moment: A Lesson from Spirit

How often do we truly live in the now?

Most of us drift through life with our minds somewhere else, worrying about tomorrow, replaying yesterday, or trying to control the outcome of things we can’t yet see. I know I did. For years, I wondered why my mediumship wasn’t progressing. I was doing all the development work, attending circles, reading books, taking courses, but something felt… stuck.

It wasn’t until recently, during a week-long spiritual workshop, that something truly clicked. The tutor, a gifted and deeply grounded medium, asked us to consider a simple but profound question:

“Is this thought based in love or fear?”

That one question became a catalyst for change. Because when I really stopped to observe my thoughts, not just in my spiritual practice, but in my day-to-day life, I realised just how much I was operating from a place of fear. Fear of not doing enough. Fear of not getting it right. Fear of being seen, and paradoxically, fear of being invisible.

Everything in life is love - or fear

The more I reflected, the more I saw how binary the mind can be. Every thought, every feeling, every decision we make can be traced back to either love or fear. And fear, if we let it, will run the show. It'll tell you you're not good enough. It'll keep you trapped in the past or always looking to the future. It'll make you question your gifts, your path, your purpose.

But the spirit world doesn’t speak through fear. Spirit speaks through stillness, presence, and love.

That week, the medium handed each of us a rubber bracelet, a positivity band, and asked us to wear it. The task was simple: every time we caught ourselves having a fear-based thought, we had to move the bracelet to the other wrist. The aim? To go 21 days without moving the band, to retrain the mind and start rewiring the subconscious patterns that keep us stuck.

Let me tell you - on day one, I think I moved that bracelet 40 times. By day seven, it was just two or three. That awareness alone shifted something powerful in me. It brought me back to the present moment, the only place where life, spirit, and true connection exist.

Mediumship, Presence & the Monkey Mind

When we’re stuck in our thoughts, the “monkey mind” takes over. It jumps from fear to distraction to doubt. It pulls us away from what’s real. And in mediumship, just like in life, that noise blocks the flow.

I’ve come to realise that quieting the mind isn’t just a tool for better readings. It’s a pathway to freedom.

When I’m still, when I’m present, the energy of the spirit world becomes clearer. The messages become stronger. I’m no longer trying to “get it right” or prove anything. I’m simply being, and that’s where the most beautiful connections are made.

But this doesn’t just apply to mediumship. Whether you’re working in business, raising a family, or walking your own spiritual path, presence is everything. It’s the doorway to love. It’s where healing happens. It’s where clarity lives.

You are the director of your life

One of the most powerful realisations I’ve had recently is this: we are not our thoughts, we are the thinker of them. That means we get to choose which ones we give power to.

You are the director of your own life. The script is being written in every moment, and you get to choose whether it’s written in the ink of fear or the ink of love.

So if you’re reading this and feeling stuck, anxious, overwhelmed - pause. Breathe. Come back to this moment. Let go of yesterday. Don’t rush into tomorrow. Just be here.

The spirit world is always present. And when we are too, something beautiful happens—we remember who we are.
